Illidan, Kerrigan, and Sonya on wolf mounts.

Mounts are a gameplay mechanic which enables heroes to move quickly through the battleground. Players choose their hero's mount before entering the game, and can assign different mounts to different heroes. There are different types of mounts in the game, with the Horse and Battle Beast mounts being free mounts which are available to players from the start, and other mounts being available either by purchase from the store or by promotional means. Different mounts, however, do not provide any mechanical change and are purely cosmetic.

A few non-humanoid heroes cannot use standard mounts and are restricted to hovering mounts, including Alarak, Azmodan, Zagara, and Anub'arak.

Ragnaros, Kel'thuzad and Mephisto are limited to use their one hero specific mount that functions the same as a regular mount.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Icon mount.png

Heroes mount by pressing the Z key causing them to channel in place for .75 seconds, causing them to begin riding their mount. While mounted, heroes receive a 30% boost to their movement speed which allows them to cross the battleground or get to objectives quickly, however, taking damage, attacking, or using an ability will dismount immediately preventing the use of mounts in combat. Many active traits, such as Azmodan's General of Hell or Gazlowe's Salvager, are exceptions to this rule and do not dismount the hero on use.

A few talents have special interactions with mounts, with Genji's Agile Dismount empowering his Trait when used while mounted, Hanzo's Mounted Archery causing his Trait to instantly mount him and grants bonus movement speed, and Malthael's On a Pale Horse granting a passive 20% increased mount movement speed. Medivh and Rehgar have special Traits allowing them to transform into a unique mount. Some heroes cannot use any standard mounts and have their mount button function changed. The Lost Vikings, Sgt. Hammer, and Probius gain a temporary speed boost when using the mount button, similarly Gall's mount pushes Cho and grants him a speed boost instead. Lunara's mount is a permanently active speed boost. Abathur, Brightwing, Dehaka, and Falstad can instantly bypass long distances, but their abilities to do so have long cooldowns. Lúcio's and D.Va's mounts allows them to shoot while moving, while D.Va's Meka actually reduces her movement speed although in Pilot form she can mount normally.

Hero-Specific Mounts[edit | edit source]

Mount Usable By Backstory Notes Tints
Broodmother Flight Useable by Zagara. Abathur's alterations of the Queen essences suppressed their flight in order to improve their abilities to care for the Hive. Of course, this does not extend to Broodmothers.
Crypt Lord Wings Useable by Anub'arak. In the years following the Third War, Azerothian scholars hypothesized that the wings of spiderlords were vestigal, incapable of flight. They were very wrong.
Flames of Wrath Useable by Azmodan. As the Lord of Sin, Azmodan can draw upon each of its various vices. Once his wrath is unleashed, there are few creatures that can outrun it.
Gravitic Thrusters Useable by Fenix. Unknown
Highlord's Ascent Useable by Alarak. Should he choose to float only an inch off the ground, you would still be beneath the Highlord.
Horse (Carried) Useable by Cho. Unknown Cho'Gall can carry any Horse mount.
Molten Flow Useable by Ragnaros. Many of the Firelord’s foes believe that if they can just stay outside of his reach, he will be unable to chase them down. What part of "ALL SHALL BURN" was unclear?
Rancorous Miasma Useable by Mephisto. Unknown
Terror Charge Useable by Diablo. See Diablo. See Diablo run. Wait... since when can Diablo run? Run from Diablo! Run!!!
Unrelenting Frost Useable by Kel'Thuzad. It is said the frosts of Northrend descend upon the unwary in an instant; chilling beyond the bone and into the soul.

Skin-specific mounts[edit | edit source]

Mount Usable By Backstory Notes Tints
Bat Form Useable by Crimson Count Arthas. Marquis Arthas was never one for intensive study. It is little wonder, then, that his mastery over the power of transformation is somewhat... incomplete. Still, it makes for a fearsome visage.
Bat Transformation Useable by Countess Kerrigan. It's Heroes of the Storm Trivia Time™! Did you know that the Countess Kerrigan doesn't transform into a vampire bat, but rather a fruit bat instead? Talk about bananas!
Hallowed Broom Useable by Cursed Witch Whitemane. Unknown
Mecha Morph Useable by Mecha Tassadar. Mecha Tassadar, mechamorphanize!
Mecha Thrusters Useable by Mecha Tyrael. Unknown
Rocket Jump Jets Useable by Maraudin' Muradin. Most Marauders believe Reapers are insane to let someone strap twin rocket thrusters to their backs. I mean, they're right... but that's beside the point.
Treads of Oblivion Useable by Dominus Vile Azmodan. Tread HEAVILY.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The idea for mounts came from Thrall, where, in early development, he was given a Cyber Wolf to ride in order to distinguish him from Za'Muro which sparked the idea of the use of mounts in general.[2] Originally, each hero had their own mount. For instance, Kerrigan used a Zergling.[3]
  • Mounts are a feature of World of Warcraft. Mounts taken from the game include horses and wolves.
  • The Cyber Wolves bear resemblance to the predators of the StarCraft setting, albeit being canine instead of feline.
  • The Rainbow Unicorns harken to the unicorns found in the secret Whimsyshire level of the Diablo series.
