Mounts are a gameplay mechanic which enables heroes to move quickly through the battleground. Players choose their hero's mount before entering the game, and can assign different mounts to different heroes. There are different types of mounts in the game, with the Horse and Battle Beast mounts being free mounts which are available to players from the start, and other mounts being available either by purchase from the store or by promotional means. Different mounts, however, do not provide any mechanical change and are purely cosmetic.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Heroes mount by pressing the Z key, causing them to channel in place for 1 second, afterwards they begin riding their mount. While mounted, heroes receive a 30% boost to their movement speed, which allows them to cross the battleground or get to objectives quickly; however, taking damage, attacking, or using an ability will dismount immediately, preventing the use of mounts in combat. Many active traits, such as Azmodan's Demon Lieutenant or Gazlowe's Salvager, and some abilities, especially toggle abilities like Fenix's Weapon Mode, are exceptions to this rule and do not dismount the hero on use. Dismounting when a hero is successfully mounted places mount on a 4 second cooldown. Mounting is instant and has no cooldown as long as the hero remains in the Hall of Storms.
Special Mounts[edit | edit source]
Some heroes have their mount button function changed. They cannot use any standard mounts (except D.Va, who uses a regular mount while in Pilot Mode).
- Abathur's "Deep Tunnel" lets him channel to tunnel to any visible location.
- Brightwing's "Phase Shift" lets her channel to teleport to any allied hero, healing them on arrival.
- D.Va's "Mechanized Walker" passively lets her attack while moving but reduces her movement speed while attacking or channeling an ability. In Pilot mode, she uses a regular mount.
- Deathwing's "Dragonflight" lets him channel to fly off map, recovering lost health and Armor Plates while flying, and can be reactivated to land in any visible location.
- Dehaka's "Brushstalker" lets him channel to tunnel to any Bush on the battlefield, and also increases his movement speed whenever he enters one.
- Falstad's "Flight" lets him channel to fly to a target location within a large range.
- Gall's "Shove" lets him shove Cho a short distance and grants a brief movement speed boost.
- The Lost Vikings' "Go Go Go!" temporarily increases the speed of every Viking.
- Lúcio's "Wall Ride" passively increases his movement speed while riding on terrain.
- Lunara's "Dryad's Swiftness" passively increases her movement speed at all times.
- Medivh's "Raven Form" makes him invulnerable and able to pass over terrain.
- Probius' "Worker Rush" passively increases his movement speed and can be activated to further boost it, but the bonus is lost if he takes damage.
- Rehgar's "Ghost Wolf" has an instant cast time and is uninterrupted by damage, and also makes his basic attack lunge at the target.
- Sgt. Hammer's "Thrusters" temporarily increases her movement speed by a large amount.
[edit | edit source]
- Cassia's level 16 "War Traveler" makes mounting instant while Avoidance is fully charged.
- Genji's level 1 "Agile Dismount" increases the range and lowers the cooldown of Cyber Agility while mounted.
- Hanzo's level 13 "Mounted Archery" grants 25% movement speed for 3 seconds when mounting and causes Natural Agility to instantly mount him.
- Junkrat's level 20 "I Hate Waiting!" permanently replaces his mount with a rocket that moves at 150% speed, but increases his mount cooldown to 8 seconds.
- Malthael's level 1 "On a Pale Horse" grants a passive 20% increased mount movement speed.
- Raynor's level 13 "Giddy-Up" increases mount speed by 8%.
- Yrel's level 7 "Divine Steed" makes her mount instant and grants 60% bonus movement speed, decaying over 3 seconds, when mounting.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The idea for mounts came from Thrall, where, in early development, he was given a Cyber Wolf to ride in order to distinguish him from Za'Muro which sparked the idea of the use of mounts in general. Originally, each hero had their own mount. For instance, Kerrigan used a Zergling.
- Mounts are a feature of World of Warcraft. Mounts taken from the game include horses and wolves.
- The Cyber Wolves bear resemblance to the predators of the StarCraft setting, albeit being canine instead of feline.
- The Rainbow Unicorns harken to the unicorns found in the secret Whimsyshire level of the Diablo series.
