Mana and Health Bar

The blue Mana bar

Mana is the most common resource Heroes use to cast Abilities. Underneath your green Health bar a blue bar shows your Hero's Mana supply. Using an Ability requires you to have enough Mana to fulfill its Mana cost. If a Hero starts running low of Mana, the number of Abilities he/she is able to use immediately drops (they’ll turn dark purple in the Hero’s Ability list). Mana replenishes over time, but not always quickly.

Mana pool[ | ]

Heroes that use Mana start the game with 500 Mana at level 1, except Probius who starts with 600 Mana, and gain 10 maximum Mana every level onwards. What this means is by level 20 Mana users have a Mana pool that is almost 40% larger and have over 60% more Mana regeneration. Mana costs are constant, so as the game progresses Mana becomes less and less of an issue. Some Heroes can additionally increase their Mana cap through Talents.

Mana Regeneration[ | ]

A Hero's Mana restores over time based on their Mana Regeneneration. Mana regeneration is passive and continues even when a Hero is disabled. Mana regeneration is measured in Mana per second. Mana regeneration can be increased by some Talents. Heroes that use Mana, except for Gul'dan and Probius, start with 3 Mana per second at level 1 and gain 0.0975 Mana per second every level. There are also some Abilities that can refund Mana if their requirement is fulfilled (e.g. Medivh's "Arcane Rift" refunds some of the Mana cost if it hits a Hero).

Some Heroes don't use Mana at all or use another resource similar to Mana. Heroes that do not use Mana include Abathur, Auriel, Chen, Cho'gall, Deathwing, D.Va, Fenix, Gazlowe, Hogger, Illidan, Junkrat, Lt. Morales, The Lost Vikings, Murky, Samuro, Sonya, Tracer, Valeera, and Zarya.

Core Concept[ | ]

  • Mana is a limiting factor for self-sustain: Any Hero who can use Abilities to recover their own Health quickly, without taking risks, is generally be limited by Mana. This helps ensure that damage enemies deal to them actually matters and isn't just magically erased at no cost. Requiring Mana for HP sustain makes it possible to win wars of attrition and is one way to keep game length from spiraling out of control. Heroes who don't require Mana for sustain generally "pay" for their sustain in other ways (such as Auriel who relies on aggression to generate Energy), or have more modestly-paced sustain with adequate counterplay (such as Muradin, Illidan, Sonya).
  • Mana is a limiting factor for harassment: Ranged Assasins with harassment Abilities, like Li-Ming, Jaina, Kael'thas, can wear down enemies before committing to a fight. At the same time, those Abilities are packaged with significant Mana costs and/or Cooldowns that really give them weight - the cost of missing is not trivial, so it feels really good when you hit. It's important that something limits the frequency with which those Abilities are used, and that enemies feel like dodging those Abilities is meaningful.
  • Mana can be a very flexible resource: Used properly, Mana forces you to think about your Ability use in more of a long-term perspective beyond just "spam on CD". It can also serve as a limiter in cases where Cooldowns don't really factor in, such as Li-Ming's Trait reset rampages. Interestingly, the degree to which Li-Ming burns her Mana before resets kick in ends up affecting how crazy she can go with those resets, so how you choose to spend your resources in that case has a big impact.[1]
  • Mana should be a meaningful part of the game, particularly in the early stages when wave clear is at a higher premium. As the game progresses, Mana tension should become less important as Heroes gain more base Mana and the game’s focus shifts to team fighting.[2]

Gameplay[ | ]

Gameplay elements that restore Mana[ | ]

  • Regeneration Globes heal 9% of the Heroes maximum Health and 7% of the Heroes maximum Mana in 5 ticks over 5 seconds.
  • Healing Fountains regenerate 30% of the Heroes maximum Mana over a period of 20 seconds.
  • The Hearthstone (hotkey: B.) allows Heroes to teleport to their Hall of Storms after channeling for 6 seconds. Upon completion, the Hero is healed for 1125 Health, 150 Mana.
  • Within the Hall of Storms, Health and Mana are restored by 8% (4 ticks of 2% per second) of his max HP and Mana per second.

Mana restoring Abilities[ | ]

  • Alexstrasza's Basic Ability, "Flame Buffet", restores 50 Mana if it hits any enemies affected by its burn effect.
  • Ana's Heroic Ability, "Nano Boost", restores 200 Mana to an allied Hero.
  • Arthas' Trait, "Frostmourne Hungers", restores 30 Mana on-hit.
    • His level 1 Talent, "Eternal Hunger", permanently increases its Mana restored by 4 whenever it hits a Hero, up to 40 additional Mana.
  • Gul'dan's Trait, "Life Tap", prevents him from naturally regenerating Mana, but can be activated to consume his own Health to restore Mana with no cooldown.
    • His level 4 Talent, "Improved Life Tap", increases the Mana restored.
  • Genji's Basic Ability, "Swift Strike", refunds its Mana cost and cooldown if a Hero hit by it dies within 1.5 seconds.
  • Kerrigan's Basic Ability "Ravage", restores 20 Mana and one charge if the enemy hit by it dies within 1.5 seconds.
  • Leoric's Ability, "Skeletal Swing", refunds 50% of its Mana cost if it hits an enemy Hero.
  • Maiev's Basic Ability, "Fan of Knives", refunds its Mana cost and cooldown if it hits at least 2 enemy Heroes.
  • Malfurion's Trait, "Innervate", restores 20% Mana over 5 seconds to a target ally and causes their Cooldowns to recharge faster.
  • Medivh's Basic Ability, "Arcane Rift", refunds its Mana cost and cooldown if it hits an enemy Hero.
    • His level 13 Talent, "Revitalize", causes it to affect himself restoring 15% of his maximum Mana.
  • Muradin's Basic Ability, "Storm Bolt", gains a passive effect after reaching level 10 that causes Muradin's Basic Attacks to restore 3 Mana and reduce its cooldown by 1 second.
  • Nazeebo's Trait, "Voodoo Ritual", causes enemy Minions killed while afflicted with his Trait to permanently increase his maximum Mana by 1.
    • His level 4 Talent, "Blood Ritual", causes enemies killed while afflicted with his Trait to restore 2% of his max Mana and Takedowns grant 3 stacks of Voodoo Ritual.
    • His level 4 Talent, "Hexed Crawlers", causes "Corpse Spiders" to restore 1% of his maximum Mana whenever they attack.
    • His level 4 Talent, "Big Voodoo", increases the Mana bonuses from his Trait by 100%.
  • Orphea's Basic Ability, "Shadow Waltz", refunds 35 Mana if it hits an enemy Hero.
  • Probius' Trait, "Warp In Pylon", prevents him from naturally regenerating Mana, but restores Mana rapidly while he's inside a Pylon's Power Field.
  • Rehgar's Basic Ability, "Lightning Shield", restores 2 Mana every time an enemy is hit by it.
    • His level 1 Talent, "Stormcaller", also causes hitting enemy Heroes with it to permanently increase his maximum Mana by 1, stacking up to 300 times.
  • Tassadar's Trait, "Resonance Beam", grants him increased Mana regeneration based on how much Resonance he has, up to 100%. At maximum Resonance, he also regenerates an additional 3 Mana per second.
  • Whitemane's Heroic Ability, "Divine Reckoning", converts 25% of the damage dealt by it to Mana.
  • Zagara's Heroic Ability, "Nydus Network", summons a Nydus Worm, which Zagara can enter to regenerate 10% of her maximum Mana per second.

Mana restoring Talents[ | ]

  • Anduin's level 4 Talent, "Surge of Light", causes his Basic Attacks against targets Rooted by "Chastise" to restore 25 Mana.
  • Azmodan's level 7 Talent, "Art of Chaos", restores 40 Mana if "Globe of Annihilation" hits at least 2 enemy Heroes.
  • Blaze's level 1 Talent, "Neural Stimpack", can be activated to restore 40 Mana and cause his Ability cooldowns recharge faster.
  • Blaze's level 4 Talent, "Oil Dispersal", causes his "Flame Stream" to restore 5 Mana per enemy Hero hit.
  • Brightwing's level 1 Talent, "Greater Polymorph", restores 50 Mana if her "Arcane Flare" hits enemy Hero within 2 seconds of Polymorphing them.
  • Cassia's level 7 Talent, "Seraph's Hymn", causes her Basic Attacks against enemy Heroes to restore 10 Mana.
  • Chromie's level 16 Talent, "Fast Forward", restores 10 Mana when "Sand Blast" hits a Hero beyond 50% of its maximum range.
  • Deckard's level 4 Talent, "rejuvenation Potion", restores 15 Mana to the allied Hero that picks up his "Healing Potion".
  • Deckard's level 16 Talent, "Safety in Numbers", grants him 50% Mana Regeneration if at least 2 allied Heroes are near.
  • Diablo's level 1 Talent "Devil's Due" increases the effects of Regeneration Globes and Healing Fountains by 2.25% per soul.
  • Diablo's level 7 Talent, "Eternal Flames", restores 45 Mana whenever he Stuns an enemy Hero with "Shadow Charge" or "Overpower".
  • E.T.C.'s level 4 Talent, "Crowd Surfer", refunds the Mana cost his "Powerslide" if it hits no enemies.
  • Falstad's level 1 Talent, "Gathering Storm", restores 6 Mana for each Hero hit by Hammerang.
  • Garrosh's level 4 Talent, "In for the Kill", refunds the Mana cost and cooldown of his "Bloodthirst" if the enemy dies within 0.5 seconds of being hit by it.
  • Greymane's level 1 Talent, "Perfect Aim", restores 45 Mana if his "Gilnean Cocktail" hits an enemy Hero.
  • Greymane's level 4 Talent, "Insatiable", causes his Basic Attacks to restore 10 Mana and reduce the cooldown of Healing Fountain by 0.5 seconds while "Inner Beast" is active.
  • Imperius's level 1 Talent, "Consuming Flame", restores 30 Mana if "Solarion's Fire" hits an enemy Hero.
  • Imperius's level 4 Talent, "Press Forward", increases the duration of active Regeneration Globe's effects to 8 seconds whenever he damages an enemy Hero.
  • Imperius's level 20 Talent, "Unrelenting Descent", causes his "Wrath of the Angiris" to restore 30% of his maximum Mana when he descends.
  • Jaina's level 1 quest Talent, "Fingers of Frost", permanently grants her an additional 0.1 Mana Regeneration for each Regeneration Globe collected up to 2 per second.
  • Jaina's level 4 Talent, "Arcane Intellect", causes damage dealt to Chilled targets to restore Mana, 5 for Basic Attacks, 20 for Abilities.
  • Johanna's level 4 Talent, "Eternal Retaliation", causes her "Condemn" to mark enemies for 10 seconds. Her next Basic Attack against each marked target restores 10 Mana.
  • Kael'thas' level 1 quest Talent, "Mana Addict", permanently grants an additional 15 maximum Mana for each Regeneration Globe collected.
  • Kael'thas' level 4 Talent, "Mana Tap", restores 4% of his max Mana upon using "Verdant Spheres".
  • Kael'thas' level 4 Talent "Nether Wind", restores 80 Mana if "Gravity Lapse" hits an enemy Hero.
  • Kel'Thuzad's level 13 Talent "Chain-Link", refunds the Mana cost of "Chains of Kel'Thuzad" if it pulls an enemy Hero.
  • Kerrigan's level 1 Talent, "Assimilation Mastery", increases her Mana Regeneration by 150% while "Assimilation" is active.
  • Kharazim's level 1 Talent, "Insight", restores 14 Mana every time his Trait triggers.
    • His level 20 Talent, "Fists of Legend", can grant the Talent (and the other unselected level 1 option) for 50% of its effect if it wasn't chosen at level 1.
  • Kharazim's level 20 Talent ,"Epiphany", can be activated to restore 33% of his max Mana.
  • Leoric's level 1 Talent, "Fealty Unto Death", restores 6 Mana whenever an allied or enemy Minion dies nearby.
  • Li Li's level 1 Talent, "Free Drinks", refunds the Mana cost of the Ability if it heals an allied Hero below 50% maximum Health.
  • Li Li's level 1 Talent, "Eager Adventurer", increases her Mana regeneration by 150% while "Fast Feet" is active.
  • Li-Ming's level 1 Talent, "Force Armor", increases her Mana Regeneration by 100% when below 25% Mana.
  • Li-Ming's level 1 Talent, "Power Hungry", increases the Mana gained from Regeneration Globes by 100%.
  • Li-Ming's level 4 Talent, "Triumvirate", restores 40 Mana if "Arcane Orb" hits an enemy Hero beyond 50% of its base range.
  • Lúcio's level 1 Talent, "Party Time", permanently increases his maximum Mana by 10 for every 1 minute allies spend in his "Crossfade" radius.
  • Lúcio's level 1 Talent, "Smooth Moves", causes his Basic Attacks to restore 0.5 Mana while "Wall Ride" is active.
  • Mal'Ganis's level 4 Talent, "Echo of Doom", causes "Necrotic Embrace" to explode again when it expires, restoring 5 Mana for each enemy Hero hit.
  • Malfurion's level 1 Talent, "Deep Roots", permanently increases his maximum Mana by 14 for each Hero Rooted by "Entangling Roots".
  • Medivh's level 1 Talent, "Raven's Intellect", increases Medivh's Mana and Health Regeneration by 75% while in "Raven Form".
  • Medivh's level 20 Talent, "Arcane Brilliance", can be activated to restore 200 Mana to all nearby allied Heroes.
  • Mei's level 1 Talent, "Heavy Pack", restores 3 Mana every time her "Blizzard" damages an enemy Hero.
  • Mei's level 4 Talent, "Cold Front", restores 80 Mana if she enters her own "Blizzard" while "Icing" is active.
  • Mephisto's level 1 Talent, "Furious Spark", restores 2 Mana for every 3rd hit against the same target.
  • Mephisto's level 4 Talent, "Hateful Mending", restores 10 Mana for every enemy Hero hit.

  • Nova's level 7 Talent, "Perfect Shot", refunds half of "Snipe's" Mana cost when it hits an enemy, doubled against Heroes.
  • Orphea's level 7 Talent, "Mind Devourer", causes hitting an enemy Hero with "Dread" to refund 60 Mana after its Quest is completed.
  • Probius's level 13 Talent, "Power Overflowing", restores 2 Mana per second to allied Heroes within a Pylon's Power Field.
  • Ragnaros's level 7 Talent, "Hand of Ragnaros", restores 10 Mana if "Empower Sulfuras" hits enemy Heroes at least 5 times.

  • Thrall's level 4 Talent, "Mana Tide", restores 15 Mana when "Frostwolf Resilience" triggers.
  • Uther's level 1 Talent, "Wave of Light", restores 5 Mana for every allied or enemy Hero affected by Holy Radiance.
  • Uther's level 1 Talent, "Hammer of the Lightbringer", restores 1.5% of his maximum Mana with each Basic Attack.
  • Uther's level 4 Talent, "Holy Shock", makes "Holy Light" able to target enemies, dealing damage to them, and restoring 45 Mana when doing so.
  • Uther's level 7 Talent, "Armor Of Faith", restores 90 Mana when Uther gets Stunned, Rooted or Silenced. 20 second cooldown.
  • Valla's level 1 Talent, "Puncturing Arrow", restores 40 Mana if its initial impact hits an enemy Hero.
  • Valla's level 4 Talent, "Arsenal", launches 3 grenades, which deal damage and restore 25 Mana upon hitting an enemy Hero.
  • Valla's level 4 Talent, "Death Dealer", refunds the Mana cost and cooldown of "Vault" if its empowered attack kills an enemy.
  • Whitemane's level 1 Talent, "Righteous Flame", permanently increases her maximum Mana by 2 for each Hero hit by "Searing Lash". Heroes hit by 2nd strike count as 2 hits.
  • Xul's level 7 Talent, "Trag'Oul's Essence", restores 0.5% of his max Mana whenever a Skeleton attacks.
  • Zul'jin's level 1 Talent, "Boneslicer", causes "Grievous Throw" to pierce all enemies and restore 15 Mana per Hero hit.
  • Zul'jin's level 4 Talent, "Troll's Blood", restores 10% of his maximum Mana if "Regeneration" is channeled for its full duration.
