75 / 40 | I Am Eternal! | During the The Admiral Revealed quest in World of Warcraft, Mal'Ganis yells "Kirel Narak! I am Mal'Ganis, I am eternal!" when he is at 20% health.
The second part of the quote is also his Summon voice line in Hearthstone.

My Revenge | Another quote from The Admiral Revealed. Mal'Ganis says "You'll never defeat the Lich King without my forces. I'll have my revenge, on him and you!" before being defeated.
Settle the Score | During the Culling of Stratholme, Mal'Ganis told Arthas to "Gather your forces and meet me in the arctic land of Northrend. It is there that we shall settle the score between us. It is there were your true destiny will unfold."[1] |

The Naaru are a race of immortal energy beings of the Holy Light. They are usually altruistic and wise, but when weakened or near death, their holy energies fade and are replaced by those of the Void, the Light's cosmic opposite. Such dark Naaru can be extremely dangerous, and they may devolve further into monsters called void gods.[1]
|
Lothraxion is a Nathrezim who has been infused with the Holy Light and serves as the High General of the Army of the Light, a holy golden army who formerly waged war against the Burning Legion on Argus under the leadership of the naaru Xe'ra.[1]
|
Mal'Ganis was tasked to bring Arthas into the service of the Lich King, but Ner'zhul betrayed the dreadlord and allowed Arthas to kill him. As a demon, the dreadlord was not permanently killed, and years later he returned and swore vengeance on Arthas (who had now become the Lich King). However, Mal'Ganis never ended up acting on this promise.[1]

Cho'gall was originally a member of the Shadow Council, who orchestrated the orcish Horde on behalf of the Burning Legion. However, after the Second War, the ogre abandoned the Horde (and by extension, the Legion) to instead swear service to the Old Gods.[1]

Mal'Ganis and Dreadlord Jaina are both Nathrezim in service to the Legion.[1]

Refers to how dreadlords generally prefer manipulation and subterfuge rather than directly engaging in combat.[1]
|
Garrosh's father Grommash was infamously the first orc who drank the blood of the demon Mannoroth, which enslaved the orcs to the Burning Legion (though Grom later redeemed himself by killing Mannoroth during the Third War). As a result, Garrosh despises anyone and anything that has to do with demons or their corruptive magic.[1]
|
Gul'dan was the orc chosen by Kil'jaeden to corrupt his race into servitude to the Legion and became the first orcish warlock and the founder of the Shadow Council. However, during the Second War on Azeroth, Gul'dan struck away from the main Horde force in an attempt to claim the demonic power inside the fabled Tomb of Sargeras. This betrayal ensured the Horde's – and by extension, the Legion's – defeat in the war.[1]
|
|||
|
Illidan has both worked for and betrayed the Legion several times in the past, as his true goal has always been to eradicate them entirely.[1]
|
|||
|
Jaina and Arthas were once lovers, and later they worked together to combat the undead plague spreading throughout Lordaeron. However, Jaina was unable to prevent Arthas' fall to darkness, a fact she felt great guilt over.[1]
|

A reference to Balnazzar and Mal'Ganis' corruption of the Scarlet Crusade and Scarlet Onslaught, respectively.[1] Possibly a reference to Johanna's Zakarum faith, a religious order corrupted by Mephisto.

The Lich King and the Scourge were created to serve as forerunners for the Burning Legion's invasion of Azeroth, but the Lich King later broke free of the demons' control. Kel'Thuzad has always remained steadfast to the Lich King and played an important role in the Scourge's rebellion against their demon jailors.[1]

The Aranasi are a race of intelligent spider demons loyal to the Burning Legion. The adult females of the species possess large bony wings that appear to be made out of spider limbs, which look very similar to Kerrigan's iconic skeletal wings.[1]

Manach sheek-thrish is an Eredun phrase with no known translation, originally spoken by Archimonde in the Battle for Mount Hyjal raid.[1]
|
At the heart of the Nathrezim homeworld of Nathreza was the dreadlords' greatest monument, a massive archive containing records of every conquest and campaign the Legion has performed during its long history.[1]
|
|||
|
This refers to the Vault of the Wardens, a huge prison facility on the Broken Isles where the Watchers contained all the monsters and criminals they'd imprisoned over the years. During the Legion's latest invasion of Azeroth, they attacked and occupied the vault, unleashing many of its dangerous inmates to serve their purposes.[1]

Medivh was possessed from birth by Sargeras, the Burning Legion's ruler, and under his influence he opened the Dark Portal that unleashed the orcish Horde on Azeroth. Many years later when the Burning Legion tried to invade once more, Medivh returned as a Prophet to guide Azeroth's mortal races to unite against, and ultimately triumph over, the demons' invasion.[1]

Kil'jaeden corrupted the orcish race into a bloodthirsty, demon-corrupted Horde in service to the Legion. The Horde invaded Azeroth and fought in two brutal wars before being defeated by the Alliance. A generation later, Thrall reformed the Horde and led the orcs to freedom, both from the humans and from their former demon masters.[1]

Uther served as Arthas' mentor in the prince's youth, training him in the ways of the paladin and even coming to see him almost as a son. However, just like Jaina, Uther was unable to prevent Arthas' turn to evil and was later killed by his former student.[1]

Originally, Yrel's people – the draenei – were members of the eredar race on the planet Argus. When Sargeras invited the eredar's three rulers to join his Burning Legion, two of the leaders (Archimonde and Kil'jaeden) gladly accepted, while the third (Velen) and his followers fled with the help of the naaru. While Velen's people became known as draenei, the eredar who joined the Legion were transformed into monstrous demons later known as man'ari, and they became the foremost tacticians and commanders of the Legion's forces, with Archimonde and Kil'jaeden as Sargeras' main lieutenants. The draenei and man'ari eredar have been mortal enemies ever since.[1]

"Loa" is a collective term for various powerful gods and spirits worshiped by the troll tribes. Given the Nathrezim's usual tactics, it wouldn't at all be strange for them to impersonate such objects of worship.[1]

While the members of the Burning Legion hail from many different races, they all speak the common language of Eredun, or Demonic. Ironically, the Nathrezim also have their own separate tongue, but they're very secretive about it and rarely use it outside their homeworld.[1]

vs. Arthas | This is where your journey ends, boy. | Callback to what Mal'Ganis tells Arthas at the start of the Warcraft 3 mission "Frostmourne": "This is where your journey ends, boy. Trapped and freezing at the roof of the world, with only death to sing the tale of your doom."[1]
vs. Dreadlord hero | Is this how Varimathras felt? | Varimathras was recruited by Sylvanas Windrunner and aided her in securing Lordaeron for her Forsaken, culminating in killing Balnazzar as a proof of loyalty, despite the rule prohibiting Nathrezim from slaying one another.[1]
vs. Jaina | Join your beloved in death. | Most likely refers to Arthas, who was killed by the heroes of Azeroth atop Icecrown Citadel.[1]
vs. Kel'Thuzad | It was unwise of you to side with Arthas. | Throughout the Third War and its aftermath, Kel'Thuzad remained absolutely loyal to Arthas and to the Lich King and played a significant role in the civil war between the Scourge and the Legion.[1]
vs. Uther | And now your failure is complete, Lightbringer. | Likely a reference to a scene in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi in which Darth Vader tells Luke that "Now [Obi-Wan's] failure is complete". The relationship between Uther and Arthas has many similarities to that of Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader, with the experienced warrior being betrayed and killed by a beloved student turned evil.[1]
vs. Whitemane | You outlived your usefulness. | Another nod to Mal'Ganis' leadership of the Scarlet Onslaught.[1]
vs. hero with kill streak | Enough! Your killing spree ends here.

A quote from the The Admiral Revealed quest.[1]
All too easy. | Mal'Ganis can say this when killing a player in Culling of Stratholme. It's also possibly a reference to the duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, during which Vader at one point says "All too easy" after Luke falls into a carbonite-freezing chamber.[1]
Your death is in vain. | Another quote from the The Admiral Revealed quest.[1]

You call on me? | One of Varimathras' select quotes in Warcraft 3.[1]
What is it now? | One of the select qutoes for the Dreadlord (unit) in Warcraft 3.[1]
I watched Varian die on the Broken Shore. Admittedly, I didn't do much after that, but I was there! | Lampshades how Mal'Ganis was one of many demons who appeared in the Battle for Broken Shore, the event that kicked off the World of Warcraft: Legion expansion and in which Varian Wrynn was killed by Gul'dan, but ended up never appearing again after that.[1]
So many people mistake me for Varimathras that I've just started signing his autograph when they ask me for one. It's easier than correcting them. | Most Nathrezim tend to look nearly identical to each other, to the point where the Warcraft 3 developers had to give each dreadlord character in that game a different color to make them easier to tell apart. This quote is probably also a reference to how the art on Mal'Ganis' Hearthstone card was originally created for the WoW Trading Card Game to represent Varimathras.[1]
I heard that the Black Dragonflight tried to destroy Stormwind by disguising one of their own as a high-ranking official. Hmph. I suppose imitation is the highest form of flattery. | This refers to the black dragon Onyxia, who infiltrated the Stormwind court disguised as the noblewoman Katrana Prestor and orchestrated many dire events, including the kidnapping of King Varian Wrynn. She had designs to take over Stormwind entirely but was eventually unmasked and killed by Varian and his comrades. Onyxia's tactics were very similar to the Nathrezim, who are also masters of disguise and infiltration of mortal societies.[1]
You'd think that after Balnazaar, the Scarlet Crusade would have started vetting their leadership more carefully. | Balnazzar was one of Mal'Ganis' fellow dreadlords. He corrupted the zealous human order known as the Scarlet Crusade from its inception by killing the paladin Saidan Dathrohan and possessing his corpse. Later, Mal'Ganis pulled the exact same trick with the Scarlet Crusade's splinter organization, the Scarlet Onslaught, by possessing the body of Grand Admiral Barean Westwind.[1]
For the last time, I am Mal'Ganis. I am not a turtle, I am eternal. | During "The Admiral Revealed", Mal'Ganis yells "Kirel narak! I am Mal'Ganis. I am eternal!". The latter part returned as Mal'Ganis' summon quote in Hearthstone, but over the years many Hearthstone players have misheard it as "I am Mal'Ganis. I am a turtle!", leading to countless turtle-related memes and jokes.[1]
A word of advice. The ability to incapacitate your enemies is extremely valuable. I wouldn't sleep on it if I were you.
Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of the work I did with the plague of undeath. But Hakkar the Soulflayer's Corrupted Blood? Now that was a plague! | Hakkar the Soulflayer, the Loa of Blood, is a monstrous troll god that players originally faced in the Zul'Gurub raid in classic WoW. During the boss fight, Hakkar would contaminate players with a damage-over-time disease called Corrupted Blood, which was intended to remain confined to Zul'Gurub but which -- through a player exploit -- managed to spread to players in the outside world. Entire cities soon became infected, with players dying like flies until Blizzard patched the game a few weeks later. Despite being unintentional, the event is a famous part of WoW history, and some university researchers studied the incident as an example of how real-world pandemics might spread.[1]
It is forbidden for one Nathrezim to kill another. Granted, the penalty is just a citation and small fine, but it goes on your permanent demonic record. | This rule was first mentioned in the Warcraft 3 mission "A New Power in Lordaeron", in which Sylvanas Windrunner commanded Varimathras to kill his brother Balnazzar. He initially refused, citing the rule, but eventually obeyed Sylvanas' orders.[1]
I wanted to storm Icecrown Citadel and claim my revenge on Arthas, but... I could never get a group together. If only flexible raiding had existed back then! | At the end of "The Admiral Revealed", Mal'Ganis tells the player character that Azeroth's heroes will never be able to defeat the Lich King without Mal'Ganis' Scarlet Onslaught forces, and he vows to one day have his revenge on Arthas and the player both. However, Mal'Ganis was noticeably absent when players invaded the Icecrown Citadel raid and destroyed the Lich King. The joke about flexible raiding refers to how WoW raids used to require a specific amount of players, with Icecrown Citadel requiring a raid size of 10 or 25 players, while later expansions introduced a flexible system where raids will scale in difficulty based on group sizes between 10-25 players, making it easier to get raid groups together.[1]
Are you enjoying this, mortal? Wasting valuable time clicking on me so you can hear these jokes? You're not recording this, are you?
Have you heard the one about the Nathrezim baker? He was a bread lord.
No, seriously, that's why we used infected grain to spread the plague of undeath. It was his thing. | Prior to the Third War, Kel'Thuzad and his Cult of the Damned spread the Plague of Undeath throughout Lordaeron by infusing the disease into grain that would then be distributed from the city of Andorhal to outlying villages, baked into bread, and eaten. The plan proved brutally effective, with entire towns being transformed into Scourge minions almost overnight.[1]
(phone rings) Yes? Oh, hello Darkness. My old friend. Have you called to talk to me again? (pauses then sighs) No. I still don't have the Demon Hunter's number. Ask the other one. | A reference to the one of Warcraft III Dreadlord joke quotes, which itself is a part of "Darkness calls" series of joke quotes. Also a reference to Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" song. |
