The Dark Nexus is tied, almost at a primordial level, to the base and chaotic nature of the Storm.[1] The avatars of the Dark Nexus are twisted reflections of heroes and villains. While they may wear familiar guises, they are, in truth, chaos and hatred incarnate - an ancient evil that can only be bargained with, never controlled.[2] Some creatures of the Dark Nexus defy both the laws of physics and the laws of biology. Some are also unexpectedly docile. Examples of native lifeforms include the Dark Nexus Manta and Dark Nexus Hound.[3][4]

In order to overcome the Grave Keeper's rebellion at the Towers of Doom, the Raven Lord summoned two beings from the Dark Nexus through a crack, setting them loose upon the Grave Keeper's forces.[5] Though the Raven Lord was defeated, the crack remained. It widened. Spiderwebbed. A drip became a flow, and the flow became a flood, chaos and hatred spilling across the Nexus, threatening to defile it forever.

Some, like the noble Protoss heroes Tassadar and Fenix, journeyed into the rift, risking their sanity to slow the corruption. Others, drawn by the outpouring of power, sought to harness it. Deathwing soared into the violent heart of the Dark Nexus intent on gorging himself and waging a war of conquest. As with Tassadar and Fenix, contact with the turbulent forces found within transformed the fearsome black dragon forever.[6]
