Cho'gall, the Twilight's Hammer Chieftain, is a two-player melee warrior/ranged assassin hero from the Warcraft universe. Equipped with an impressive array of dark spells, and a brutish strength that can break even the most durable opponents, Cho’gall packs a whole lot more punch than the average contender brings to the Nexus.[1]

Cho'gall is a unique two-headed hero for two players. Each head is controlled by a single player and has its own set of abilities. The Cho head controls Cho'gall's movement; wherever Cho goes, Gall follows. When Cho and Gall stop arguing and work together, they can set up powerful combos.[2]

Background

Warcraft This section concerns content exclusive to the Warcraft universe.

Powerful, dangerous, insane—many words have been used to describe the Chieftain of the Twilight's Hammer clan, and yet they still fail to truly capture Cho'gall's madness.[1]

Two personalities share the body of Cho'gall: Gall, cunning master of dark magics and forbidden incantations, and Cho, who's never met a problem he couldn’t punch really, really hard. When working together, Cho's powerful attacks and Gall's destructive spells feed into each other to make Cho'gall's enemies rue the day they crossed paths with this ogre. With Cho's brawn and Gall's dark powers, these two are ready to take the Nexus by storm... as soon as they can agree on a plan.[2]

Development

Cho'gall first came up in discussions about a month before the technical alpha started — the Developers had this pitch for a Hero that had a relatively standard ogre mage fantasy. But then they looked at that second head, and said to themselfs, "There's got to be more we can do here!" There were some basic ideas — maybe you select a second talent for the second head; maybe the second head is constantly casting a spell, and as the first head, you need to try to work with it. Eventually, there started to be this collective consciousness trending towards doing more with that second head. Multiple members of the team from multiple disciplines (art, engineering, design) were all pitching this idea of the "two-player Hero." He already has two heads so it seemed like such a natural fit, we had to run with it!

The Developers quickly found that there were a lot of ways to do a two-player Hero, but each one had various potential pitfalls. They decided to focus each head in its role, and isolate the movement controls to a single head (Cho). Thankfully they had already developed Abathur — a Hero who offered a similar gameplay experience. They looked at Gall as more of a concentrated version of Abathur, where he was attached to another Hero's body. The more they played with Cho'gall, the more they started to look at them as Cho driving the vehicle with Gall as his gunner. Cho exists to get Gall into position to deal the damage.

They didn't want this to be two Heroes glommed onto a single body, so they tried out various levels of interaction between the two heads. In fact, the first iteration of Rune Bomb had Cho summon these orbiting Bombs that would just passively rotate clockwise around his body a good distance away from him, and Gall would have to use Shadowflame to pop the bombs. They quickly discovered, however, that this was incredibly frustrating to play, and not very rewarding.

Cho'gall is one of the biggest technical hurdles ever overcome by their engineering and technical design staff. First they had to figure out how to get the second player there. Setting up Cho was relatively straightforward for the engine — he's just another Hero. Gall, on the other hand, is an "invisible, uninteractive" unit that is grafted onto Cho, forced to travel where he goes. When they were first working on the pair, they came across many situations that could disjoint these two brothers from each other. The technical design team answered each new issue quickly so they could get back to playtesting.[3]

Trivia

  • Cho'gall first appeared in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (1995).
  • Cho is voiced by Patrick Seitz. Gall is voiced by Grant George.
  • Cho'gall was intended for inclusion almost since the beginning.[4][5]
  • Cho'gall was one of the four heroes revealed at BlizzCon 2015.[1]
  • In addition to the normal mount options, Cho'gall can choose to carry any horse-type mount over his shoulder.
  • The game pairs one player's choice of skin (chosen at random) with the other player's choice of mount.
  • The game also combines the names of the two players, using the first three letters of Cho's player's name and the last four of Gall's player's name. For example, Mike and Flynn would make Mik'lynn.
  • Cho'gall's appearance was based mainly on his Warcraft II and comic designs, to give him a classic look. His armor bears the emblem of the Twilight's Hammer clan.
