Angel hero	Malthael: My quarrel is not with you... sibling. Angel hero: <Hero dependent>		Malthael's great plan was to eradicate humanity, for with the Lords of Hell defeated after the death of Prime Evil Diablo, humans in their mixed heritage of angel and demon were the last strong "demonic" force left in the universe. He had no interest in killing off angels, as his sparing of a mortal Tyrael proved.
	Angel hero: <Hero dependent> Malthael: I will do what you cannot.		Most angels, at this point, are willing to be in alliance with humanity, a result of how humanity was what saved the High Heavens from destruction by demonkind. Malthael, those who follow him, and Imperius are the major exceptions, and to Malthael, it falls upon him to annihilate humanity, and with it the last bastion of demonic presence, for the majority of angels no longer will.
Arthas	Malthael: You are no god of death, boy. Arthas: Silence.		As the Lich King, Arthas was able to convince the Vrykul people that he was a god of death, causing many to pledge their service to him and the Scourge and to compete to receive his gift of undeath.
	Arthas: Are you ready for the slaughter? Malthael: You gaze upon death itself.		Malthael became the Aspect of Death when he came to believe that wisdom would be the eradication of humanity. To do that, he took a vortex of human souls where the Worldstone once lay and turned it into a Soul Prison for him to harness their energy from.
Auriel	Malthael: Hope alone will not end the conflict, sister. Auriel: You are ever a font of hope.		Malthael's goal is to forever end the Eternal Conflict, leaving Heaven victorious. He sees no other way to do this but the genocide of humanity.
	Auriel: Embrace your hope. It shall lead us to victory in the end. Malthael: Hope is an illusion. In the end only death remains.
Dehaka	Malthael: Curious. Many souls stir within you. Dehaka: I collect what I can.		Essence could be seen as the equivalent of souls in StarCraft, since they store what makes a specific creature what they are and can be absorbed by zerg to evolve, taking traits of their fallen foes.
	Dehaka: You collect many different kinds of essence. Must learn from you. Malthael: You may find death a stern teacher.		Another dialogue that may imply that essence is actually a soul. The teacher and learning part may also reference Malthael's previous time as the Aspect of Wisdom, for his teachings guided angelkind throughout the majority of time.
Demon hero	Malthael: Your kind will be expunged from creation, demon. Demon hero: <hero dependent>		Angels and Demons are in a Eternal Conflict with each other.
	Demon hero: <hero dependent> Malthael: We are allies for now... but never equals.		Angels and demons will always be at odds with each other. To an angel, they are the highest type of being, and demons are the lowest.
Diablo	Malthael: Al'Diabolos... Diablo: I would destroy you if I could.		This is Diablo's real name. Diablo is just the more commonly known one.
	Diablo: Bear witness to the power of terror, angel. Malthael: Even terror fears death.		In actuality, Diablo is incapable of feeling fear. To Deckard Cain, this is what makes him most dangerous. Perhaps that one true, hidden fear was himself as a corpse, if Malthael’s line is an indication.
Diablo hero	Malthael: Human... frail and corrupt. Diablo hero: <hero dependent>		Malthael's issue with humanity is they get to choose if they’re good or evil, unlike angels and demons. To him, humans are too corrupt and too short-lived to be allowed such a privilege.
	Diablo hero: <hero dependent> Malthael: You will not be spared.		It doesn't matter to Malthael how much good a human does. In order to save the masses of Heaven, a few good people must die to destroy the many bad.
Diablo 3 hero	Malthael: Nephalem. Diablo hero: <hero dependent>		This is the line Malthael greets the Nephalem with the first time they meet during Diablo III.
	Diablo hero: <hero dependent> Malthael: The end is inevitable.		This quote marks the second phase of the Malthael boss fight during Diablo III.
Imperius	Malthael: Imperius. Imperius: Brother... If only you had not attacked the High Heavens...
	Imperius: How, Malthael? How could you betray everything we stand for? Answer me! Malthael: Careful, brother, lest wrath consume you.
Johanna	Johanna: Haven't I killed you several times, Malthael? Malthael: And I you.		Likely a reference to Adventure Mode, where a player can fight bosses as they wish, rather than at certain points in the story. A player can kill a boss hundreds of times, and in times where things go wrong, the boss can kill the player many times as well.
Lesser evil hero	Malthael: A "lesser" evil. Lesser evil hero: <hero dependent>		The Lesser Evils are four powerful demons who are only second to the three Great Evils. These four Lesser Evils hold their own domains in Hell and constantly have sought to gain greater power. These four evils are Andariel, Duriel, Belial, and Azmodan.
	Lesser evil hero: <hero dependent> Malthael: Your end will come soon enough.
Li-Ming	Li-Ming: The Angel of Death? Here? Malthael: Death respects no borders, Nephalem.
Mephisto	Malthael: Dul'Mephistos. Mephisto: Death. A never wholly welcome guest.		This is Mephisto's real name. Mephisto is just the more commonly know one.
	Mephisto: Your hatred will be your undoing, Malthael. I feel it. Malthael: Hatred is a concern of the living.
Murky	Malthael: What is this... thing? Murky: <Response indicating he is excited and ready to fight>		There are no fish people in Diablo. Something like Murky would be extremely odd to Malthael, who once knew (or believed he knew) everything.
	Murky: <Playfully questioning to the person next to him> Malthael: You understand my great work? Curious.		Murky's life is all for vengeance, and to slay every non-murloc in Azeroth for their continued transgressions against his kind. This is pretty similar to Malthael's work to eradicate all humanity.
Tyrael	Malthael: Tyrael... Tyrael: Malthael... how far you have fallen.		Malthael has a tendency to just say people’s names like that qualifies as a hello.
	Tyrael: Are you ready to mete out justice? Malthael: Yes, brother.		All angels refer to each other as brothers and sisters, for they all were born of Anu’'s spine, Anu being the original Great Good. In a way, they all come from the same “father”, if you will.
Xul	Malthael: Death should not be wielded by the corruptible. Xul: Only actions will get this over with. Not words.		Malthael finds humans to be weak to temptation and corruption. Necromancers controlling the power of death, as a result, is a personal affront to him.
	Xul: Those who disturb the Balance shall be unmade. Malthael: Humanity's destruction will bring a new balance.		Necromancers believe in a balance between good and evil, that evil should never be truly eradicated, for it will simply shift a balance so that good turns on itself. Malthael could be seen as the very proof of that: with the Prime Evil destroyed and demons effectively erased, angels such as Malthael and Urzael turned on humanity and their own kind.

vs. Angel hero	This was not my desire.		The only reason angels like Imperius end up in conflict with Malthael is because Malthael attacked the Pandemonium Gate in the High Heavens to prevent the nephalem from following him. Malthael’s entire goal is to leave angels as the last form of sentient life in the universe, for only they are truly good and deserving of life.
vs. Arthas	Death spares no king.		This reminds me of a Yogg-Saron quote in reference to Arthas: “He will learn: no king rules forever! Only death is eternal!”. When Arthas is killed, the ghost of his father Terenas also states “No king rules forever, my son.”
vs. Auriel	Hopeless.		Without Auriel, angels can no longer feel hope. When she was captured by Diablo, it was enough for angels to give up and consign themselves to death at the hands of the Burning Hells. Killing her can only cause even worse problems for them.
vs. Azmodan	Your sins will be expunged.		Azmodan is the Lord of Sin.
vs. Demon hero	All evil will be destroyed.		Similar to a quote in Diablo III: Reaper of Souls: “A world free of evil, you need but die!”
vs. Diablo	The Eternal Conflict ends.		A direct quote from Malthael’s boss fight, said randomly throughout the fight.
vs. Diablo hero	Humanity cannot be trusted.		The beginning of one of Malthael’s journal logs. “The humans cannot be trusted. They are born of angel and demon, but demons pervert whatever they touch. The humans are corrupt, and are not worthy of the choice between good and evil - angels and demons do not choose, as it should be."
vs. Diablo 3 hero	Your corruption ends, Nephalem.		Humanity's heritage from nephalem is specifically why Malthael hates them. The fact that nephalem were being born again proved to him that the danger of demonic resurgence is always possible.
vs. Tyrael	You were a fool to stand against me.		Tyrael is the one who initially begins the war against Malthael, recruiting the Nephalem and eventually getting the aid of other angels after Malthael attacked Pandemonium Gate. Tyrael also actively voted to spare humanity long ago, while Malthael abstained instead of spare humanity and sanctuary like Auriel and Itherael (and then later wishes he had voted to destroy them back then). Finally, as Tyrael is the new Aspect of Wisdom , it can also be seen as a targeted insult, calling Wisdom a fool.
vs. Xul	You toy with forces beyond you.		As the Necromancer uses death in combat, it kind of flies in the face of one of Malthael’s quotes: “Death is beyond your reach.”
Generic	Oblivion.		A direct quote from Kil'jaeden’s boss fight, said randomly throughout the fight.

Mmm?		The initial grunting poke quotes are a reference to how Malthael is an extremely quiet individual. He rarely speaks, and when he does, it's often in extremely short sentences. When he was the Aspect of Wisdom, he spoke with such a melody that the other angels could’t help but revere him. As he became less benevolent, though, his voice became cold and dark, capable of filling a man's thoughts only of permanent and empty death. This is such a defining feature of him that he is known as The Silent Angel.
Death is no joking matter.		Malthael is quite serious. Since poke quotes are intended to be jokes, it's extremely out of character for him to do anything even remotely funny or superfluous, even more so than the majority of other serious Blizzard characters.
In the absence of wisdom, only death remains.		Malthael was once the Aspect of Wisdom, but chose to cast that aside to become the Aspect of Death when he went missing.
I am become death. The destroyer of worlds.		In an interview about the first atomic bomb dropping, credited father of the invention J. Robert Oppenheimer stated that upon seeing the bomb drop, he thought of a translation of a Hindu scripture that read "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds".
You might be a king, or just a street sweeper... yet sooner or later you dance with the reaper.		A line from Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey that was adapted from a German quote.
Death? No... I'm saying "debt." It's far more frightening.		Death and debt sound very similar, death and taxes are the two constants of life, and being in debt while alive is probably actually scarier than dying for some people.
