Sergeant Alabama "Bama the Hammer" Kowalski, the Siege Tank Operator, is a Ranged Assassin Hero from the StarCraft universe. She has served some of the toughest tours around the Koprulu sector. The thunderous roar of her siege tank's shock cannon strikes fear right into the heart of the toughest of warriors... including some of her allies.

Background[ | ]
Alabama Kowalski, also known as "Sgt. Hammer," is a famed Crucio-siege tank pilot of the Terran Dominion. Her ability to deliver her shells within inches of her allies has earned her a reputation among the Dominion Marine Corps, with some marines remarking "never trust a women who paints her tank red."
Siege tanks are terran vehicles that can be configured to fulfill both the armored support and the long-range artillery support roles. The dual-mode siege tank concept was a Terran Confederacy response to the Guild Wars and the Goliath. Prior to the war, work had progressed on a static "final defense" cannon. However, the conflict demonstrated the need for mobility and as a result an effort was made to make the cannon more mobile. The solution was creative. An existing tank design was modified so that it could operate as a conventional tank in addition to being able to deploy the cannon and become a static artillery emplacement at will. Mobile siege tanks were in existence by 2480, several years before the official beginning of the Guild Wars. Two primary variants of the siege tank exist the Arclite, in service during the Great War, and the Crucio, which remained the core siege tank of the Dominion in the Second Great War and beyond.
Siege tanks function in two modes. First is the "tank" or "assault mode" in which the vehicle may be used in the familiar armored support role using relatively light weapons. The second is the more radical "siege mode" in which the vehicle becomes a static emplacement able to deploy a much more powerful and longer ranged weapon.
Gameplay[ | ]
Sgt. Hammer is a Ranged Assassin who excels at dealing large amounts of sustained damage from a very long range. Sgt. Hammer has the ability to alternate between Tank Mode (where she is mobile and has a shorter range and less powerful damage) and her Siege mode (where she is immobile yet has a longer range and more damage compared to her mobile counterpart). In general, Sgt. Hammer does well against team compositions that lack hard-engages, and as part of teams that can properly protect her, allowing her to freely decimate her foes and safely take down Structures.

Gain Stealth when entering Siege Mode or after not taking or dealing damage for 3 seconds while in Siege Mode. Basic Attacks while Stealthed deal 125% more damage.
Remaining stationary for at least 1.5 seconds while Stealthed grants Invisible.
- Ambush has a 0.1875 second grace time after leaving Stealth to benefit from the damage bonus.
- Does not benefit from other sources of Stealth.
- Damage bonus stacks additively with other offensive damage modifiers that can affect Sgt. Hammer's Basic Attack damage.
Increase Siege Mode's splash damage to 60% of Basic Attack damage, and increase its splash radius by 25%.
Cooldown: 80 / 5.0 seconds
Activate to increase Basic Attack damage dealt by 30% for 5 seconds. Hitting Enemy Heroes or Structures with Basic Attacks while in Siege Mode reduces the cooldown of Maelstrom Rounds by 5 seconds.
Stores up to 3 charges.
- Targets hit by the splash of Siege Mode Basic Attacks also trigger the cooldown reduction.
- Damage bonus stacks additively with other offensive damage modifiers affecting Sgt. Hammer's Basic Attack damage.
Reduce Concussive Blast's cooldown by 4 seconds, its Mana cost by 40, and when cast create an impassable wall in front of Sgt. Hammer for 4 seconds.
- 1) Wall consists of five circular blocking units with 0.875 radius.
- Concussive Blast can be reactivated after 1.5 seconds to end the effect early.
Using Neosteel Plating while in Siege Mode grants Unstoppable for 2 seconds.
- The effect is removed immediately upon leaving Siege Mode.
Basic Attacks while in Siege Mode heal for 10% of the damage dealt.
- Targets hit by the splash of Siege Mode Basic Attacks also trigger the effect.
Spider Mines detonate 3 times over 3 seconds. Basic Attacks against enemy Heroes grant 5 Mana and reduce the cooldown of Spider Mines by 1.5 seconds. Increase this bonus to 2.5 seconds while in Siege Mode.
- Targets hit by the splash of Siege Mode Basic Attacks also trigger the effects.
Sgt. Hammer can move at 50% Movement Speed while in Siege Mode.
While in Siege Mode, Basic Attack range is increased by 1 every 1.5 seconds, up to 3.
Cooldown: 70 seconds
Fire a missile across the battlefield, dealing 500 damage to non-Structure enemies in its path.
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Deals 164 damage on impact, and leaves a napalm area that deals 50 damage per second. Lasts for 4 seconds.
Moving while Thrusters is active leaves a trail of up to 5 Spider Mines. Additionally, increase the Slow of Spider Mines by 15%.
- Mines are dropped at 0.5 second intervals, if Sgt. Hammer is moving at the time.
While in Siege Mode, Concussive Blasts's damage and knockback distance are increased by 75%.
- Damage bonus stacks additively with other offensive damage modifiers that can affect Concussive Blast's damage.
While in Siege Mode, hitting Heroes with Basic Attacks reduces the cooldown of Thrusters by 5 seconds.
- Targets hit by the splash of Siege Mode Basic Attacks also trigger the effect.
Neosteel Plating grants 20% maximum Health as a Shield for 2 seconds and increases Basic Attack damage by 30% for 5 seconds.
- Damage bonus stacks additively with other offensive damage modifiers affecting Sgt. Hammer's Basic Attack damage.
Attacking a Hero who is Slowed, Rooted, or Stunned increases your Basic Attack damage by 30% for 3 seconds.
- Damage bonus stacks additively with other offensive damage modifiers affecting Sgt. Hammer's Basic Attack damage.
Basic Attacks against enemy Heroes deal bonus damage equal to 1.5% of the Hero's maximum Health.
- Only affects the primary target of the attack.
Blunt Force Gun's missile orbits the planet every 5 seconds. Only the last missile fired orbits.
Napalm Strike's range is increased by 75% and its impact does 50% more damage.
- Damage bonus stacks additively with other offensive damage modifiers affecting Napalm Strike's damage.
Upon detonating, Spider Mines reduce the Armor of enemy Heroes hit by 10, up to 50, for 4 seconds.
- Stacks additively with itself, but not with other negative Armor effects. Other defensive damage modifiers may stack.
Hitting enemy Heroes with Basic Attacks while in Siege Mode grants 10% Attack Speed for 5 seconds, up to 60%.

- Sgt. Hammer represents the siege tank unit from StarCraft (March 1998). After being introduced in Heroes of the Storm, she went on to appear in the Co-op Missions mode of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void (November 2015) and the StarCraft Field Manual (November 2015).
- Sgt. Hammer is the first Heroes of the Storm original character to later appear in a canon source in her home universe, and the only StarCraft original character to have done so, having appeared in the StarCraft Field Manual in November 2015. While she, Lt. Morales and Blaze would show up in the Co-op Missions mode, the mode has been declared to be non-canon by Blizzard.[1]
- Sgt. Hammer is voiced by Courtenay Taylor.[2]
- She is a replacement for the characters of Horace Warfield and Edmund Duke from previous builds.[3]
- Hammer's rank of sergeant reflects the rank of siege tank units in the first StarCraft, which were "master sergeants."
- Hammer's talents "Maelstrom Rounds," "Regenerative Bio-Steel," and "Ultra Capacitors" are names of upgrades for the siege tank in the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty campaign.
- Graduating Range originated in Heroes of the Storm, but was later added as an upgrade for the Heavy Siege Tanks of Nova in StarCraft II's Co-op Missions.
